The discussion around AI has become more and more prevalent over the past year, with the advent of many AI imaging services like Midjourney, OpenAI’s DALL-E or ChatGPT. AI services, in a way, have been used for a long time, but now they are getting smarter and, above all, more open to casual users.
Spotifythe leader in music streaming, now enters the fray with a tool they simply call: DJ.
This isn’t the first generative playlist released by Spotify, but it’s the first in which they’ve done so publicly and labeled an official beta.
[DJ] will sort through the latest music and revisit some of your old favorites, maybe even resurface that song you haven’t listened to in years. It will then review what you might enjoy and offer a stream of songs selected just for you. Plus, it constantly updates the range based on your feedback.
If you don’t feel the vibe, just press the DJ button and it will turn it on. The more you listen and tell the DJ what you like (and dislike!), the better his recommendations. Think of it as the best of Spotify customization, but an AI DJ in your pocket.
The more you listen to Spotify, the more the service has access to your streaming habits and moods, down to the time of day and geolocation data. Maybe you prefer some type of music at home on a Tuesday at 4 p.m. rather than coming home from work on a Friday at 6 p.m., this new AI will tap into that data and should (hypothetically) offer you the appropriate soundtrack to your mood.

Ready to have the DJ soundtrack of your day? It’s rolling out in English starting today for Spotify Premium users in the US and Canada.
- Access your music stream on the homepage in the Spotify mobile app on your iOS or Android device.
- Press Play on the DJ card.
- Let Spotify do the rest! The DJ will serve up a musical lineup accompanied by short commentary on songs and artists, chosen just for you.
- Can’t feel the vibe? Simply tap the DJ button at the bottom right of the screen to switch to a different genre, artist or mood.
